The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad (1949) Concept piece of The Headless Horseman.
The artwork measures 8" x 9.5". The Headless Horseman, the nefarious specter of Disney’s The Legend of Sleepy Hollow, is depicted here in all of his frightening glory. This concept piece, by famed Disney artist Mary Blair, manages to bring a great deal of emotion to a character that doesn’t even have a face on which to show it. The rage and wrath of The Headless Horsemen are personified by the glowing red eyes and wild mane of his faithful black steed and the ominously glowing head which he wields in his left hand. A beautiful contrast is evoked by the pale full moon in the background, which emits a gentle glow illuminating the vengeful sword he brandishes over what would be his head if he were to have one. In this piece, Mary truly got to the heart of this heartless character, and it would make a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection.
There is evidence of pin holes towards the extremes of each corner, which can be easily matted out.
As pinning up artwork for evaluation was often part of the creative process, this is fairly common for this type of work..
